When I hear these Monk compositions, I instantly picture myself ca. 1962-5, age 14-17 in my Tara Hills (suburb of Richmond CA) bedroom listening to all the Monk LPs from the local library, and playing to them on my trombone, using whatever lead sheets I could get at the time...but mostly transcribing by ear my own charts. Really, mostly just listening, not playing, then…getting awash with it all for the first time.

I saw Monk perform at some SF concert hall back then. His set was short, which disgruntled the audience. I felt protective of him against them, thought they should count themselves lucky that they got what they did.
